Kaikki alkoi ompelukoneesta 1967

Olavi Koivunen työskenteli nuorena miehenä laukkufirmassa niittaripoikana. Tuona aikana hän tutustui Annikkiin, osti hänelle ompelukoneen ja siitä kaikki sai alkunsa.

"Olihan se alkuun aika kotikutoista mutta jostainhan se oli aloitettava. Muistamme hyvin kun nahkaa leikattiin saunakamarissa ja ompelukone nakutti olohuoneessa.

Lapsemme luonnollisestikin kasvoivat laukunteon keskellä. Ompelukoneen surina ei heitä haitannut vaan päinvastoin he halusivat aina katkoa langanpäitä ja tehdä muita helppoja hommia"

Aluksi laukkuja valmistettiin muille laukkufirmoille. Tässä vaiheessa kummallakaan ei ollut alan koulutusta vaan kaikki opeteltiin kantapään kautta.

"Alku oli tietysti opettelua koska kokemusta ei juurikaan ollut. Intoa oli sitäkin enemmän. Ja kun on intoa niin asioita oppii nopeasti"

Vähitellen syntyi kuitenkin visio omasta tuotemerkistä. Olavin ja Annikin haaveet toteutuivat 1970-luvun alussa, kun heidän perustamansa OK-tuote näki päivänvalon.

Olavi ja Annikki kehittyivät nopeasti laukkumaailman edelläkävijöiksi. He toivat markkinoille ensin kehyslaukut, sitten brodeeratut laukut ja lopuksi harjatusta nahasta valmistetut laukut, jotka muuttivat pariskunnan elämän.

"70-80 -luku oli meille kulta-aikaa. Rakennettiin iso tuotantohalli ja väkeä oli töissä parhaimmillaan 40 ihmistä. Laukkuja tehtiin niin paljon, että aina ei edes pysytty kärryillä kenelle niitä tehdään. Kaikki kuitenkin vietiin käsistä.

Tuohon aikaan laukkuja myytiin Suomeen, Ruotsiin, Norjaan, Englantiin, Hollantiin, Ranskaan ja Tanskaan."

Menestysvuosista Annikille ja Olaville on jäänyt yksi tarina erityisen hyvin mieleen, jossa he konkreettisesti näkivät saavutuksensa ja aistivat maineensa maailmalla. Tapahtuman sijoittuivat Pariisiin ja 1980-lukuun. Sattumalla oli myös oma osuutensa.

"Olimme Pariisissa muotimessuilla. Tuntematon tyyppi tuli meille juttelemaan mutta eihän me sitä juurikaan ymmärretty koska kumpikaan meistä ei puhunut kieliä. Sen verran saatiin ranskalaisen höpinöistä kiinni, että meidän tulisi välittömästi mennä La Samaritainen tavaratalolle.

Päätettiin sitten lähteä tavaratalolle, vaikka ihmeteltiin kovasti, että mitä me siellä tehdään. Näin jälkikäteen voidaan todeta, että kannatti mennä.

Kävelimme La Samaritainen liukuovista sisään ja näky oli uskomaton. Silmiemme edessä oli 600 OK-tuotteen laukkua. Tuntui, ettei tavaratalossa paljon muuta ollutkaan kuin meidän valmistamia laukkuja.

Saunakamarista La Samaritainen näyteikkunalle, onhan siinä vähän kontrastia."

Nousu laukkumaailman huipulle ja siellä pysyminen yli vuosikymmenen ajan oli antoisaa ja opettavaista aikaa. Vaikeat ajat kuitenkin alkoivat kun tuonti halpamaista kiihtyi. Tämä oli kohtalokasta OK-tuotteen tarinalle.

"Tuonti halpamaista valtasi markkinat ja kysyntämme hiipui samaan tahtiin. Olimme tilanteessa, jossa meillä oli päällä isot investoinnit tuotantotilaan sekä henkilöstöön ja myynti ei enää vetänyt entisellään.

Elimme tuohon aikaan melkoisen paineen alla. Samaan aikaan kun kauppa ei enää kannattanut, pankki ja verottaja vaati omansa. Kaikkemme yritettiin siihen asti kunnes vaihtoehtoja oli jäljellä tasan yksi.

Ei tuota aikaa lämmöllä muistele. Siitäkin kuitenkin selvittiin kuivin jaloin. Vaikka kaikki muu menikin, taidot ja intohimo säilyivät."

Kuten tapana on sanoa, vanhan loppu on uuden alku. Annikilla ja Olavilla riitti edelleen sisua ja he yrittivät uudelleen. Tällä kertaa myös nuorempi sukupolvi tuli mukaan kuvioihin ja heidän poikansa Sami otti vetovastuun yrityksestä.

Samin mukaantulo antoi uutta nostetta ja toivoa tulevasta. Tavoitteena oli päästä takaisin Ruotsin markkinoille. Brändiä uudistettiin ja tuotemerkistä tuli Okay's.

"Nuorena miehenä aloitin vientiponnistelut uudelleen. Ensimmäisenä markkinana Ruotsi. Kaikki alkoi taas nollasta, olihan edellisestä Ruotsin kaupasta kulunut lähes 20 vuotta.

Kaupoissa siellä oli uusi sukupolvi, aivan kuten meilläkin. Vanhoja liikkeitä oli lopettanut ja uusia oli tullut tilalle.

Valtavana haasteena alussa oli kieli. Pelkäsin puhua ruotsia, kieltä jota eniten koulussa inhosin. Onnistuin kuitenkin puhelimessa esittelemään itseni sekä asiani.

Näin homma lähti liikkeelle ja ensimmäiset tapaamiset oli sovittuna Tukholmaan"

"Isän (Olavi) kanssa reissattiin yhdessä. Hän oli autokuski ja minä luin karttaa sekä hoidin puhumisen asiakkaiden kanssa.

Nopeasti kävi selväksi, että mallistomme kaipasi parannuksia. Kuuntelimme asiakkaita tarkalla korvalla ja teimme muutoksia tuotteisiimme.

Sitkeä työ palkittiin kun aloimme saada ensimmäisiä tilauksia muutaman tyhjän reissun jälkeen. Pian olimme kaikkien laukkukauppiaiden huulilla ympäri Ruotsia. Jälleenmyyjäverkosto kasvoi yli 50:een asiakkaaseen.

Ruotsin valloituksen lomassa olin aloittanut yhteydenotot myös Norjaan. Onnistuimme sielläkin. Uusia jälleenmyyjiä lähes 30."

"Erityisesti mieleeni on jäänyt yksi matka, näytteilleasettajaksi laukkumessuille Osloon.

Matkalla poikkesimme Ruotsissa Örebrohon. Siellä oli tuohon aikaan Handsmakarn-ketjun pääkonttori. Ketjulla oli noin 70 liikettä eri puolilla Ruotsia. Olimme esitelleet laukkujamme aikaisemminkin mutta ilman tulosta. Tällä kertaa tärppäsi! Tilaus oli yli 3000 laukkua!

Oslossa messuillakin meni hyvin. Olimme luksusongelman edessä. Miten saamme kaikki laukut ajallaan tehtyä ja toimitettua. Samaan aikaan Suomessa Stockmann lisäsi ostojaan."

"Tuo oli aikaa, jolloin opin tuntemaan suurta ylpeyttä tuotteistamme ja tietysti itsestäni. Olin suomalainen laukkukuningas Ruotsin ja Norjan kuninkaiden mailla

Tuota huimaa menestystä kesti muutamia vuosia, kunnes alkoi muutosten tuulet puhaltaa. Verkkokauppa alkoi tehdä tuloaan ja se näkyi kivijalkakauppojen myynnissä. Myös maailmalla tunnettujen isojen brändien laukut tulivat ryminällä markkinoillemme. Stockmann Suomessa uudisti omaa brändiään ja laittoi meidät pihalle valikoimistaan.

Jälleenmyyjäverkostomme pieneni ja perinteisiä laukkuliikkeitä meni nurin. Oltiin jälleen uuden edessä. Miten saamme laukkumme kuluttajille jos jälleenmyyjiä ei ole?"

"2010-luvun alkupuolella aloittamamme hevosaiheisen tuoteperheen suunnittelu nousi tässä kohtaa vahvasti esille. Aloimme käydä hevosalan messuilla- ja tapahtumissa esittelemässä uutta tuoteperhettä.

Vastaanotto oli heti alusta alkaen hyvä vaikka epäilijöitäkin oli. Onneksi luotimme visioomme, sillä tänä päivänä hevosaiheiset laukut ovat myydyimpiä tuotteita"

"Vuonna 2017 teimme vaimoni Iiriksen kanssa ison päätöksen. Iiris lopetti toimintansa kampaamoyrittäjänä ja hän tuli mukaan perheyritykseemme.

Samoihin aikoihin astui esiin kolmas polvi, meidän Severi. Hän otti ohjat verkkokaupan perustamisen ja markkinoinnin osalta"
