Allt började från en symaskin 1967

Som ung jobbade Olavi Koivunen som nitare i en väskaffär. Under den tiden lärde han känna Anniikki, som han köpte en symaskin åt och därifrån fick allt sin början.

”Visst var det väldigt hemlagat till en början, men någonstans måste man börja. Vi kommer väl ihåg hur vi skar lädret i bastukammaren medans symaskinen knackade på i vardagsrummet.

Naturligtvis växte våra barn upp mitt bland väsktillverkningen. De stördes inte av symaskinens surr, tvärtom så ville de delta i de enklaste momenten som att t.e.x. klippa av trådänden”.

Till en början tillverkades väskorna för andra väskföretag. I detta skede saknade båda utbildning i branschen och man fick lära sig den hårda vägen.

”I början gick det ut på att lära sig, då vi saknade nästan helt erfarenhet. Men ivern fanns och då lärde man sig snabbt”.

Så småningom föddes en vision om ett eget varumärke. Deras dröm förverkligades i början på 1970-talet då OK-märket såg dagsljus.

Olavi och Annikki blev snabbt föregångare inom väskbranschen. Först ut på marknaden var ramväskan, sedan broderade väskor och till sist väskor gjorda av borstat läder, vilka ändrade parets liv.

"70-80 -talet var guldåren för oss. Vi byggde en stor produktionshall och som bäst hade vi 40st anställda. Vi producerade så många väskor att vi knappt hade koll på vem som skulle ha dem, och allt gick åt.På den tiden såldes väskorna till Finland, Sverige, Norge, England, Holland, Frankrike och Danmark.”

Från guldåren kommer Annikki och Olavi speciellt bra ihåg en händelse där de konkret fick se och känna på sin framgång internationellt. Händelsen ägde rum i Paris på 1980-talet. Även slumpen hade sin roll i händelsen.

"Vi var i Paris på modemässan. En okänd person kom fram till oss och försökte föra en diskussion på franska, men eftersom ingen av oss kunde franska gick det inte så bra. Det lilla vi förstod var att vi skulle omedelbart åka till La Samaritaines varuhus.

Vi beslöt oss för att åka, även om vi var väldigt fundersamma över vad vi skulle dit och göra. Så här i efterhand kan vi konstatera att det lönade sig.

Vi gick igenom La Samaritaines skjutdörrar och vyn framför oss var otrolig. Framför oss hade vi 600 av OK:s väskor. Det kändes som att där inte fanns så mycket annat än våra väskor.Från bastukammaren till La Samaritaines skyltfönster, en rätt stor kontrast”

Att ta sig till toppen av väsk-världen och stanna där över ett decennium var både givande och lärorikt. Utmaningen började då importen från billigare länder ökade. Detta var ödesdigert för OK-produktionen.

”Importen från billigare länder tog över marknaden och efterfrågan på våra produkter avtog i samma tempo. Vi befann oss i en situation där vi gjort stora investeringar både i produktionsutrymmen samt personal, samtidigt som efterfrågan inte var som tidigare.

Vi levde under en enorm press på den tiden. Samtidigt som affärerna inte var lönsamma längre, ville banken och skattemannen ha sitt. Vi försökte med allt, tills det fanns bara en möjlighet kvar.

Den tiden väcker inga varma minnen. Hur som hels överlevde vi också den perioden med livet i behåll. Fast vi mista allting annat, fanns kunskapen och passionen kvar.

Som man brukar säga; när en dörr stängs, öppnas en annan. Annikki och Olavi hade fortfarande tillräckligt med mod och de försökte igen. Denna gång kom också den yngre generationen med och deras son Sami tog huvudansvaret för företaget.

Samis engagemang gav ny fart och hopp om framtiden. Målsättningen var att ta sig tillbaka in på den svenska marknaden. Varumärket förnyades och blev Okay´s.

”Som ung man försökte jag få igång exporten på nytt. Den första marknaden var Sverige. Allt började från noll igen, det hade trots allt gått nästan 20 år sedan den senaste affären.

Det var nya generationer som skötte affärerna, precis som hos oss. Gamla butiker hade stängts och nya hade kommit istället.

Språket var en stor utmaning i början. Jag var rädd för att prata svenska, det språk jag hatade mest i skolan. Jag lyckades dock presentera mig själv och få fram mitt ärende per telefon.

Det var så det började och de första mötena bokades i Stockholm"

”Jag och min far (Olavi) reste runt. Han var chaufför och jag läste kartan samt pratade med kunderna.

Det kom snabbt fram att vår kollektion behövde förbättras. Vi lyssnade noga på kundernas önskemål och gjorde ändringar på våra produkter.

Det ihärdiga arbetet belönades när vi började få de första beställningarna efter att ha återvänt tomhänt hem ett par gånger. Snart var vi kända bland alla väskförsäljare runtom i Sverige. Antalet återförsäljare växte till över 50 st.

Vid sidan om erövringen av den svenska marknaden hade jag också tagit upp kontakten med Norge. Vi lyckades även där; vi fick ett trettiotal nya återförsäljare.”

”Jag minns särskilt en resa, som utställare på en väskmässa i Oslo.

På vägen stannade vi till i Örebro där det på den tiden fanns Handsmakar-kedjans huvudkontor. Kedjan hade ett 70-tal butiker runtom i Sverige. Vi hade tidigare presenterat våra väskor för dem, men utan framgång. Men denna gång lyckades vi och fick en beställning på över 3000 väskor!

Mässan i Oslo var också lyckad. Vi stod inför ett lyxproblem; hur skulle vi få alla väskor producerade och levererade i tid? Samtidigt ökade Stockmann sina inköp i Finland."

”Det var en tid då jag lärde mig känna stolthet över våra produkter och naturligtvis även över mig själv. Jag var den finska väskkungen i både de Svenska- och Norska kungarikena.

Denna enorma framgången varade i några år, tills det var dags för nya förändringar. Nätbutiksförsäljningen var på inkommande, vilket märktes i försäljningen i de fysiska butikerna. Väskor från världskända stora märken gjorde också sitt intåg på vår marknad. Finska Stockmann förnyade sitt eget varumärke och lämnade oss utanför sitt sortiment.

Vårt nätverk med återförsäljare minskade och klassiska väskaffärer gick under. Vi ställdes åter igen inför något nytt. Hur får vi ut våra väskor till konsumenterna om det inte finns några återförsäljare?”

”Våra hästinspirerade produkter som vi började designa i början av 2010-talet fick en stor betydelse i detta skede. Vi började åka runt på olika hästmässor och evenemang och presentera vårt nya koncept.

Mottagandet var bra redan från början, även om det också fanns ett visst tvivel. Lyckligtvis vågade vi lita på vår vision, för i dag hör de hästinspirerade produkterna till de mest sålda."

Hästinspirerad väskor

”2017 tog jag och min fru Iris ett stort beslut. Hon slutade som frisörföretagare och kom istället med i vårt familjeföretag.

I samma veva steg den tredje generationen fram, vår Severi. Han tog hand om lanseringen av vår nätbutik samt marknadsföringen.”
